Raincoat (If you are going for the wet games)
Towels and extra dry clothes (If you don't mind getting wet while having fun)

2 x $1 coins for lockers (Just in case you need it)
Shoes or sandals? (You might have a problem with shoes if you go for the wet games)
A small bag to contain all the above.

Reminder:

Inform your parents on your departing time; either 3pm , 3.30pm or 4pm.
A simple note from your parents with their updated contact number if you are going with your friend's parents to the Theme Park.
For all rides, you will not be able to carry your bag if it is loose. Lockers are required.
NTUC member might get the "Buy 1 get 1 free" promotion on the tickets.

Jack had learnt not to dash across the road as oncoming car may crash onto him.

Tommy lay on the road while his friends stared at him helplessly. Tommy was unconscious and he was bleeding profusely. This accident had also caused a terrible traffic jam. One of his friends quickly summoned for the ambulance with his mobile phone.

//The ambulance came within minutes and rushed Tommy to the hospital. He woke up few days later, only to find himself at the hospital. He wondered why he was at the hospital. He recalled back and remembered he had been hit by a car. He was eventually discharged a few days later and has learnt not to dash across the road as it is dangerous.

After starting the match, Alif got control of the ball and decided to move forward to the opposition side. “Here!” shouted Omar, as he was signaling Alif to pass the ball to him.

//But instead, Alif gave the ball a mighty kick, thinking he would score a goal for his team himself. Unfortunately, he sent the ball straight to the road. Since it was the opposition ball, Arif dashed to the road without looking out for oncoming vehicles.

//He was so engrossed in retrieving the ball that little did he know a car was approaching him. The car hit the brakes hard and for a moment, screeching sounds filled the air.

The doctor informed them that Arif should get enough rest before he would be able to go to school again. Surprisingly, a man whom he did not know, apologised to Arif. His told him that the man was the driver who had knocked him down. However, Arif did not want an apology. Instead, he apologised to everyone for being so careless when he was on the road. He is lucky to be alive.

//It was a picturesque morning as the sun proudly beamed its rays of sunshine down upon us. “Why don’t we play soccer?” exclaimed Belvan. “Soccer sounds fun, which means this is a set up!”, Jack shouted excitedly. Arul, Jack, Belvan and I were playing soccer with obvious glee at the field. It was early in the morning and there were no vehicles and people walking around.

//We were so engrossed in the game that we did not notice any oncoming cars. Arul accidentally kicked the ball so hard that sent the ball straight towards the road. All of us saw an oncoming vehicle, except Jack. He bravely dashed across the road as the ball was still bouncing on it. We tried to stop Jack from going further but to no avail. He did not hear us. “Clo…clo…close your eyes!” I exclaimed in a horrifying tone as the car went speeding in a high speed.

//The driver tried to swerve his car as fast as possible, but it was all too late… The sudden impact sent Jack flying ten metres away before landing onto the floor with an unceremonious thud! He was bleeding profusely. The driver dialed for the ambulance immediately. Ten minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The paramedics rushed Jack to the hospital.

//When they reached the hospital, the nurse and doctor immediately gave him a check-up.

One hour later…

No news from the doctor.

Two hours later…

Still no news.

Three hours later…

The door was pushed open and the doctor and the nurse finally stepped out wearing a sad face. We thought they would bring us bad news, but it turned out to be good. The nurse said that he was all right, but he had to depend on a wheelchair temporary. When Jack came out, Arul kept apologizing profusely. Jack said that he would not dash across the road without checking the road in future. He has grown wiser.

Kidnapped
My hands were bound with thick ropes as I tried to figure out a way to escape from the dilapidated hut. I looked around me and saw a piece of broken glass on the decayed floorboards. I reached for it with my bound hands. With my nimble fingers, I quickly used it to cut through the thick ropes around my wrists.

At long last, I was free. I prayed that my captors were asleep as I pried open the creaking windows and crept stealthily out to safety.

Mischief
Jack ran hastily towards me. Immediately, I knew that there was something up his sleeves. He gave me a sly smile and told me that Billy was up to some mischief. He said that Billy had thrown my pencil case into the pond at the eco-garden. I was as angry as a bull saw red. I yelled, “WHAT! How dare he!” Without any delay, I ran at break neck speed to the pond.

I looked to my left.

Nothing.

My right.

Still nothing.

Suddenly, I felt someone pushing me from behind. I tried in vain to maintain my balance and it was too late. I fell into the pond with a loud SPLASH!

Robbery
He brandished the knife as an evil smile flickered across his face. Holding the shiny blade to her neck, he hissed menacingly, “Give me this! And that!”

Grunting with exasperation, he reached out and with a forceful tug, he ripped off the gold chain, together with the one-inch long, jade pendant. Then he darted across the street and disappeared into one of the dark alleys.

Accident
“Bang!!!” A car had collided with a stationary lorry before bursting into flames. The car’s windscreen was smashed into a thousand pieces. The smell of burning tires hung loosely in the air as the other cars behind screeched to a halt. Thick black smoke billowed and sparks were whirling in all directions as the driver of the car tumbled out, screaming in pain. It was chaotic as everyone tried frantically to flee from the dangerous scene.

Lost
I looked frantically around the overcrowded shopping mall, but could not see any familiar faces.
I was panic-stricken and a shiver ran down my spine. I screamed for my mother but to no avail. I thought I knew this shopping mall very well and I could not believe that this petrifying experience was happening to me. I held back my tears and screamed at the top of my lungs for my mother. Confused shoppers gave me quizzical looks.

Fight
“What a nerd!” Troy yelled at Yacky. Yacky’s anger turned into violence. Fists were flying. Yacky was throwing rock-hard punches at Troy. Yacky threw a glass bottle at Troy and it smashed into smithereens. Blood gushed profusely out of Troy’s nose. In a fit of rage, both boys exchanged blows again.

The impact of Yacky’s punch sent Troy crashing into the corner of the room.

Trapped
The evil caretaker ordered me to retrieve her pearl necklace that had dropped in the old well.
I got into the bucket with fear. Then, the care-taker lowered me into the well with an evil glint in her eye. Suddenly, the limp rope gave way. I fell into the deep water and blacked out.

When I regained consciousness, the cold water had swirled round me. Panic engulfed me.
Then, the caretaker closed the lid of the well. It was a trick! The caretaker only wanted to get rid of me…

Drowning
As the boat capsized and sank, Jack was thrown overboard. He struggled and swallowed some sea water, but soon he managed to swim to a floating piece of wood. He gasped for air while trying to stay afloat. In the nick of time, a lifeguard plunged into the water. He swam powerfully until he reached Jack, and pulled him safely to shore. Jack had barely managed to escape death.

Jack recovered from the ordeal and vowed to take his subsequent swimming lessons seriously.

Lesson 1 - Being Wise About Water (Pg 30)
1) Action - Lance is pushing Arul into the water.
Consequences - Lance could drown Arul. Their playful acts could lead to rough play, putting both their lives in danger.
2) Action - Haron is leaning too far out of the bumboat.
Consequences - A sudden jerk of the bumboat, or a strong wave, coupled with the speed of the boat, could throw Haron into the sea.
3) Action - Eileen is ignoring the posted sign warning people not to swim in the quarry waters.
Consequences - Eileen may find herself in very deep water due to steep drop-offs in the quarry floor. She may get entangled in water plants and other water debris.
4) Action - Arul is sitting at the edge of the canal to fish.
Consequences - Arul could slip and fall into the canal. A sudden and rapid rise in the water level could sweep Arul away.
5) Action - Ting Ting is swimming alone, and on a beach without lifeguards. She is also swimming beyond the marked boundaries.
Consequences - Ting Ting could get into trouble in the water due to strong currents or a sudden drop in the seabed and there would be no one to help her.
6) Action - Eileen and Lance are running along the breakwater.
Consequences - Eileen and Lance could trip and fall, hurting themselves. A trip could also send them tumbing into the water.

Lesson 2 - Dangerours Waters (Pg 32)
1) James and Marcus could have avoided the accident by fishing at a proper fishing area such as a fish farm - a canal is a dangerous place to fish at.
2) I should call for help immediately by dialling '999'.

Lesson 3 - The Rules of Pools (Pg 33 - 34)
1) Haron should attend his swimming lesson rather than to skip it to play with Lance on the water slide.
2) Haron should wait for his father to meet him before continuing his swim.

4) Haron should obey all signs and not play catching with Lance.

Oral Practice - Picture 8 (Group Work)

This picture depicts a scene of a wet market. There are a lot of people. There are two stalls. One of the stalls is selling seafood, while the other is selling meats. A fishmonger is weighing a fish on the weighing scale. I think he is weighing it for the woman next to him. Next to him, a woman is holding some money. I think she is paying for the fish. Not far from her, a boy is trying to touch the crabs. A woman is holding back his hand and telling him not to touch it as he might injure himself. Perhaps, the woman is the boy’s mother. Beside them, a man is stealing a purse. I think he is a pickpocket. If I were the lady, I would be more alert. Not far from him, a lady is pointing to a piece of meat. The butcher is using a chopper, chopping the meat for the lady. In conclusion, the people in the market should take more care of their belongings.

In front of the store, there is a boy and his mother. The boy is trying to touch the crabs with his bare hands. If I were his mother, I would not let him touch anything. Beside them, there is a stall selling meat. The butcher is serving one of his customers. Not far away from the butcher, there is a pickpocket taking the lady’s purse. The pickpocket must be very daring to steal a lady’s purse in such a crowded wet market. In my opinion, this is a crowded and unhygienic wet market as the store holders should wear protective gloves. The fishmonger is attending to a lady who is buying fish from him. The lady is paying him some money. In front of the store, there is a boy and his mother .The boy’s finger is stuck in the crab pincer. If I were his mother, I would not let him touch anything. Beside them, there is a stall selling meat. The butcher is serving one of his customers. Not far away from the butcher, there is a pickpocket taking the lady’s purse. The pickpocket must be very daring and vigilant to steal a lady’s purse in such a crowded wet market. (Repetition?) In my opinion, this is a crowded unhygienic wet market as the stall holders should wear gloves. (Repetition?)

This picture depicts the scene of a wet market. There are many people there. I think it is a Sunday morning. There is a lady buying a fish from the fishmonger. She is holding some dollar notes. In front of her, there is a fishmonger weighing a fish. I think he is weighing it to determine its selling price. A boy is trying to touch a crab. There is a woman, whom I think is the boy’s mother. She is stopping him from touching the crab as one of the pincers might injure him. Behind the lady, a pickpocket is reaching into another lady’s basket, trying to take a purse from a her basket. In my opinion, the lady would be very shocked to find that her wallet missing when she wants to pay for the meat. If I were the lady, I would keep my wallet in a safe place. The butcher is chopping the meat with a chopper. In conclusion, the wet market sells fresher food than at the supermarket.

This picture depicts a scene at a wet market. There are a lot of people here. In my opinion, I think it is either Saturday or Sunday. Many people come here to buy food. There are two stalls selling fish and meats. There are prawns, fish and crabs sold there. There is a fishmonger weighing a fish on a weighing scale. Next to him, there is a woman holding two ten-dollar notes. I think she is trying to pay the fish he is weighing. Not far from them, there is a butcher and an old woman is buying meat. The butcher is chopping some pieces of meats on a chopping board. The woman is pointing at a piece of meat. In my opinion, I think she is telling which piece of meat she prefers. Behind her, there is a pickpocket taking a purse from the old woman's bag. The pickpocket is wearing earrings and I think he a gay. In my conclusion, the pickpocket should not do that as he can be put behind bars. Next to him, there is a little boy and a woman, probably his mother, at the fish stall. If I were the boy, I will not touch the crabs as it will snip my finger. Fortunately, the boy is being stopped by the mother. In my opinion, he is being scolded for touching the crab and he looked frightened when being scolded.

This is a scene of a wet market. It is very crowded. I think it should be a weekend. There is a lady buying some meat from the friendly old butcher. She seems unaware that there is a pick-pocket behind her, stealing her purse from her rattan basket. I think elderly people should be more alert and observant. I think he should not do that illegal act too as he could go to jail and only will get himself into danger. Not far from them, there is a woman and a little boy by her side. I think he is her son or nephew. She is using her left hand to grab the boy’s right hand. I think she is preventing him from getting hurt. Also, I think she is warning him not to get too near the live crabs as they might use their pincers on him. The fishmonger in front of them is weighing a fish. I think he is weighing it for the lady next to him. There are two-dollar notes in her right hand. I think she is going to use them to buy the fresh fish. In conclusion, I think everyone should be careful of pick pockets especially in crowded places and also, I think this is a good market that sells fresh and uncontaminated raw food.

This is a scene of a hawker centre. I think it is a weekend as there are a lot of people there. There is a stall selling Chicken Rice. Next to it is a stall selling Noodles. In front of the stall selling Chicken Rice, a family of three is eating their food. A boy from the family is feeding food to a stray cat. I think he is very inconsiderate as he might dirty the floor. A couple is shocked to see the boy's behavior. A man is walking towards the family of three. I think he is the father of the family. Not far from him, there is a woman enjoying her meal. Three men are looking at her angrily as they do not have any place to sit. If I were the woman, I would put the bags on the floor. In conclusion, we should not feed the animals that come by the hawker centre.

This picture depicts a scene of a hawker centre. There is a large variety of stores at the hawker centre. There is a chicken rice store and I think the hawker is chopping chicken for someone who had ordered from his stall. In front of the chicken rice stall, there is a man carrying two glasses of soft drinks on a tray. There is probably another thirst-quenching drinks stall in the hawker centre. Beside the chicken rice stall, there is a noodles stall. I think the hawker is boiling some noodles for her customers. Near the stall, there is a lady probably eating chicken rice and she puts all her shopping bags on the stools. There is a group of men glaring at her angrily and they are probably thinking how inconsiderate she is as she could have just taken one seat instead of four. If I were the lady, I would put my bags onto the floor. Beside them, there is a family eating joyfully. Within the family, there is a boy feeding food to a stray cat. I think he should not do that as the food is not suitable for cats. The other two people are probably his sister and mother. If I were his mother, I would scold him in front of everyone. (<--Why?) Not far away from them, there is a young couple staring at the inconsiderate mother(<-- ?) and son. They look disgusted. In my opinion, the boy should not feed the food to the stray cat. If I were the on-lookers, I will tell the boy that he cannot feed the stray cat. In conclusion, this is a popular but unhygienic hawker centre.

As you can see, the lady put her plastic bags on three stools where people can have a seat. In my opinion, she should not put her plastic bags on the three stools as it is very inconsiderate. She should put them on the floor. Not far away from her, there is a family of four there. I think that the man behind them is the father of the two children. The little boy is feeding a stray cat some fish. In my opinion, he should not do so because he might attract insects and will dirty the floor. There is a couple staring at him. In my opinion, they are probably disgusted by the boy’s action. In conclusion, the food court is a very convenient place to have meals.

In my opinion, this must be lunch time. There is a family at a table. The family look like they are enjoying their dishes. Perhaps the woman is their mother. In my opinion, the boy throwing food down to the cat is very inconsiderate as by doing that, he is making the floor more dirty and attracting more crows, flies and cockroaches. There is a couple who are looking at the boy unhappily. The man who is carrying two cups of drinks and walking towards them might be the father of the family. At the next table, there is a woman eating a plate of chicken rice happily. I think she might have just finished shopping and had bought a lots of items. I think she should not put the items on the chairs as it prevents others from having a place to consume their meals. There are three men who look annoyed. I think they are annoyed because of the woman's action. I like going to a hawker centre as there are many choices of food to choose from. In conclusion, this is a very popular and clean hawker center.

I think he is very inconsiderate as doing this act will only dirty the place. Behind that family, there is a man carrying a tray of two glasses of drinks. I think he is the father of the family. Next to him, there is a couple looking for a seat. The woman looks a little wary. I think she is scared of the stray cat. Behind them, there is a chicken rice stall. A butcher is chopping a chicken. I think he is the boss of the stall. The neighboring stall is a stall that sells noodles. I think the lady cooking the noodles is the lady boss. In front of the noodle stall, there are three men standing next to the table in front of them. I think they are staffs of some company nearby as they are wearing ties and are in formal wear. They are looking at the lady eating her plate of rice with stern looks. I think they are angry with the lady as she is taking up almost all the seats with her belongings. It is also very inconsiderate of her. Other people might not have a place to consume their meals.
In conclusion, I think everyone should learn to be more considerate in the public and everywhere else. Also, I think a hawker centre should be a place where one can enjoy delicious food with his family and friends. The food sold in here should be quite tender as many people come to have their meals. I think she is about to go for a jog. There are two old folks sitting on the bench. The old man is resting on the bench while the old woman is petting her pet dog. In front of them, two men are jogging happily. The park is a good place to de-stress ourselves and to have fun!

If I were one of them, I would ask them to play somewhere else before they hit someone accidentally. Behind one of the boys, there is another boy who had slipped and fell while roller-skating. Not far from the boy, there is a boy riding his bicycle. In my opinion, I think he is enjoying himself.

In conclusion, this is an exciting and fun park for everyone!

There are two firefighters shouting at the two boys.I think they are asking the boys to jump down onto the inflated mattress.Not far from them, two policemen are stopping some people from getting too close to the fire.In conclusion, people should not play with matches to ensure everyone’s safety.

This is a scene of a building that caught fire.There are firefighters and policemen.The whole flat is encircled by a big group of onlookers making a commotion.There are tongues of raging fire sticking out of the flat.One of the firefighters is climbing down the ladder with a boy lying unconscious over his shoulder.I think he is trying to rescue one by one.There is a firefighter using a fire hose to put out the fire.As you can see, there is a crowd of worried on-lookers.Two policemen are trying to calm down the on-lookers and told them not to go near the burning building.There is a huge inflatable mattress and two firefighters standing beside it.I think the two firefighters are shouting to the victims on the third floor to jump down on the mattress.In my opinion, the fire was probably caused by a gas leakage.If I were the firefighters, I am truly proud of myself.

This is a scene of a building that has caught fire. I think the reason why it is caught on fire is because someone was playing with matchsticks. There is a tremendous amount of smoke coming from the building. There is a fireman trying to put out the fire with a water hose. There are some firemen and policemen. One of the firemen is carrying an unconscious boy down to the ground by using a ladder. In my opinion, that boy is unconscious due to the black smoke and the lack of oxygen. There are two firemen on each side of the mattress, trying to encourage the two remaining persons on the third floor to jump down onto the mattress. Below them, there is a group of on-lookers who are looking at them with horrified eyes. Possibly, they are the people who managed to escape from the building. I think that during the situation like this, one has to remain calm and not to panic. If not, you will not be able to follow the instructions given by the fireman or the police.

Some guidelines for your reference:

When you are given a picture, remember to do the following:

DESCRIBE – this is the first stage of Picture Description.
Describe in general what you see.

1) Describe the scene. For example, start by saying:

"This is a scene of a bedroom."
"This picture shows the scene of a bedroom."
" This picture depicts the scene of a bedroom."

2) Describe the number of people in the scene, their gender and their ages.
For example: "There are two children here. One is a boy while the other is a girl. The boy seems to be in his early teens while the girl is perhaps 7 years old."

3) Describe what the people are doing, what they are wearing and their emotions.
For example: "The boy is wearing a striped T-shirt and a pair of shorts. He is trying to study. He looks rather irritated."

INTERPRET - once you have finished describing the picture, it is time to start interpreting it.

There are bits and pieces of shattered glass on the road.
The driver of the van is severely injured.
Maybe a piece of glass has cut the van driver's hand that causes it to bleed.
The driver of the car is stuck in his seat.
Two men are helping to free him.
In my opinion, they are very helpful and brave.
Not far from the scene, a boy is calling for help at the telephone booth.
I think he is calling for the ambulance.
There are two groups of passers-by standing aside looking at the accident.
If I were one of the passers-by, I would go and help the drivers.
In conclusion, all drivers should drive carefully and be alert at all times on the road. This will ensure their personal safety and also the safety of others.

After the voting session in class today, we have reduced our options to the following:

1) Downtown East - Chalet
Activities - Pupils will have to plan the activities themselves
Teacher's role - Oversee and facilitate
Parents' role (Volunteers) - Oversee and facilitate
Overnight - Perhaps, not confirmed; depends on responses from parents
Might have to book 2 chalets if both boys and girls are staying overnight - one for each.

Estimated cost based on 30 pupils per chalet - About $300 ($10 per pax)
Estimated cost will vary base on participation rate.
(If parents can get other chalets in the East area at a cheaper rate, it will be good.)

2) Downtown East - Escape Theme Park
Activities - All the rides and games, and makan session at Downtown East.
Teacher's role - Anything BUT the rides.... will vomit. :(
Parents' role - Anything AND to keep the teacher SAFE from the children. :P

Cost: Based on the rate on that day.

Last of all, the above are just a very brief plan on the year end outing.

And now, here's the news about our latest competition. You won't believe what we are offering you this month. As this is International Year of the Family, you have a chance to win a wonderful family holiday in Gold Coast. All you have to do is take a photograph which shows family life and write a short paragraph about it. It could be children with their parents or their grandparents.

The lucky winner has the chance to spend two weeks in Gold Coast. That's two weeks of beautiful beaches, sunshine, plenty for everyone to do. So send us your photograph, in colour or black and white, and the short write-up by 31st August. That's the closing date for entries. We will be announcing the winner on 9th September.

Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (Unit 2 and 4) - Notes

- He was in charge of a trading settlement (Pg 17) in Bencoolen.
- He saw Lord Hastings – the Governor General of India
- To look for another trading settlement as Penang and Bencoolen are too far from the main trading settlement.
- There is a need to do so, and must also maintain good relations with the Dutch.
- He set sail with a fleet of seven ships.
- On 29 Jan 1819, Raffles and his assistant, Major William Farquhar landed on the island of Singapore.
- He was impressed with what he saw* on Singapore.
- *Harbour with deep water--> big ships can call at the port.
- *Plenty of fresh water--> ships can stop at the port for water before continuing their journeys.
- *Good locality - located on the main trade route between India and China.
- Hence, he can imagine Singapore to grow into a prosperous port in the future. (A visionary)
- He decided to set up a trading settlement in Singapore.
- Singapore will always remain a free port. (Pg 21)
- He saw Temenggong (Malay Chief) -->found that Singapore did not belong to him--> belonged to the Sultan of Johor who had just died at that time.
- He invited his ellder son, Tengki Hussein / Tengki Long back to Singapore and asked him for permission to set up the British trading settlement in Singapore.
- He installed him as the Sultan of Johor on 6 Feb 1819, known as Sultan Hussein--> signed an agreement to allow him to set up a British trading settlement in Singapore. In return, the British would pay the Sultan and the Temenggong large sums of money every year.
- He left Singapore after signing the agreement. (1819)
- He returned to Singapore in 1822 (3 years later after he left).
- He helped develop Singapore into a prosperous port.
- In 1823, he banned slave trading, closed all gambling dens and banned public gambling.
- He believed education was important – started the first school, the Singapore Institution. (Currently known as Raffles Institution)
- Problems arise as settlement grew.
- Buildings are built in a very disorderly manner, making it very unsightly and difficult for people to find their way around.
- To solve the problem, he came up with a town plan. This will make Singapore an orderly place to live in.
- Large groups of settlers would be relocated under this town plan.
- He set up a committee – one European trader and two British officials. They helped him by gathering feedback from different racial groups on what they felt about the town plan.
- He decided to build more roads and buildings.
- In his town plan, he divided the town into different areas for government, commercial and residential use. The residential area was further divided into areas for different races.
- Victoria Memorial Hall, currently known as Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall was one located in the Government Area.
- Raffles place was previously the Commercial Square. It was once a hill; flatten to create space for Commerical Square.
- The earth (soil) from the hill was used to build a landing area (Boat Quay) for boats near Commerical Square, currently also known as Boat Quay. The Chinese and Europeans built houses and warehouses on the reclaimed land.

History of Raffles
- He was born on board ship in 1781.
- He started school at 12 years old.
- He left school at 14 years old as father could not pay for his school fees.
- He started working as a clerk at 16 years old when his father died.
- He did not stop learning; reading books by candlelight during the night time.
- He was promoted several times as he was hardworking and loved learning.
- He taught himself Science, French and German, and later picked up Malay from Munshi Abdullah, a Malay teacher to many Europeans in Singapore and a famous writer.
- Learning to speak Malay and understanding the Malay customs and history enabled him to get along well with the Malay Sultan and the Malay community.
- He discovered the largest flower, Rafflesia (named after him) in the world.
- He helped to start the first Botanic Gardens at the foot of Fort Canning. (He is not the founder.)
- He made hundreds of drawings of the people, plants and animals of Java, Sumatra and the surrounding islands.
- He wrote the histories of Java, Singapore, Malaya and the Celebus.
- In 1824, he returned to England. His ship caught fire. He and his family survived but all his invaluable drawings and papers were destroyed. However, he did not give up and began to redraw the maps and tried to build up his collection again. (Great determination)
- He continued to work in England until he fel ill and died in his home in 1826.
- Two statue of Raffles in Singapore; the white statue stands at North Boat Quay, known as the Raffles Landing Site, and the bronze statue can be found in front of Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall.

Qualities of Raffles
- Loved learning: Taught himself Science, French and German. He was also very knowledgeable in History, Music and Arts. Learned Malay from Munshi Abdullah.
- Had good communication skills - Learned the above languages and tried to understand Malay culture and history so as to enhance the communications between the Malay and the British.
- Was a visionary. He saw the potential of Singapore to grow into a prosperous port in the future.
- Had leadership. Under his leadership and with the use of competent people such as Farquhar and those in the committee – one European trader and two British officials, the growth of Singapore is evident.
